Photograms

Some of the first photographs ever made were photograms and the first photography book was a collection of photograms. A photographic image made without a camera, a photogram is created by placing objects directly onto the surface of a photo-sensitive material and then exposing it to light. The result is a silhouetted image varying in darkness based on the transparency of the objects used and the strength of the light source.

This course introduces students to darkroom processes without the need of a camera. In the first class, students will create basic photograms and learn the chemistry of paper processing. The remaining classes will introduce the ideas of composition and the use of negative space, and will encourage students to extend their creativity. If time permits, students will be able to hand colour some of their images during the last class.
