Digital Basics

This series of 4 courses introduces students to the basics of digital photography. You may register for any or all of the classes.

Class 1 – Camera

This class is all about learning how to use your digital camera. As “basic” digital cameras get more and more complicated, people are finding it difficult to just take good pictures. We’ll examine the settings on each student’s camera, look at what you can and can’t do with your particular camera, and discover how you can be in charge of the camera and not the other way around.

Class 2 – Computer

You’ve got dozens, maybe hundreds, of photos on your camera. Now what? In this class we’ll look at how to get those photographs from your camera to your computer, ways to organize and archive the images so you can find them easily, and finally how to size them correctly for emailing and printing.

Class 3 – Image 1

Let’s face it – many of our photos could use a little help. Red eye. Underexposed. Poor composition. Colours a little off. Regardless of what type of image correction software you have, the techniques you learn will apply.

Class 4 – Image 2

The class takes you a bit beyond the basics. Learn how to remove dust and blemishes from your images. Discover some tricks to make an ordinary photo look extraordinary.

Course fee: $30 per class or all 4 for $100
Equipment: any digital camera (please bring your manual for reference)
Prerequisites: none

Black & White Weekend

This intensive course introduces students to the fundamentals of black and white imagery: shooting, developing & printing.

The morning of Day 1 is spent learning about the properties of B&W film, tonality & filter use. After lunch we will go out and shoot in a varied urban environment and then return to class to develop our film.

Students will then create their own prints, learning some darkroom tricks to give their images that extra punch.

All materials (film, chemicals, paper) are included in the course fee but students must provide their own 35mm film camera (SLR preferred but a point-and-shoot can also be used). Lunch is not included. Students are welcome to remain at delirium during the lunch break.
